As Queensland Ambassador of Children’s Week can I say what privilege it is to be representing the most valuable asset

that we all have and that’s our children.  There should no question about it being everyone’s responsibility to care, and

nurture and to guard our children.  As a father of five children myself I have accepted this role with the fortune of for

filling this role every day of my life.

Queensland Children’s Week 2010

Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin – Family Ambassadors

We are so proud to be the first Family Ambassadors for Queensland Children’s Week. Together with Australia Zoo

we have supported Queensland Children’s Week and the Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s Day for Daniel for a number

of years, and are honoured to be representing these organisations that work so hard to protect and celebrate our children.

A TIME FOR CELEBRATION in Queensland - Children's Week, 2010!

Once again it is time for us all to celebrate Children's Week in Queensland with our focus on the theme - 'A CARING WORLD SHARES'!     This is that special time of the year when all states/territories join together to promote friendship and understanding of the needs, interests, rights and achievements of children, young people, their families and communities.   In 1954 the United Nations General Assembly encouraged countries to celebrate Universal Children's Day in conjunction with the work of UNICEF.   Today this is outlined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Australia is a signatory. In Australia, Universal Children's Day is held during Children's Week.

In March of this year I was privileged to represent Queensland at the AGM of the Children's Week Council of Australia in Alice Springs where each state/territory shares information about their Children's Week activities held during the previous year.   This is a wonderful opportunity to meet with colleagues who are all focused on the needs, welfare and wellbeing of Australia's children and young people.

The Council was delighted that the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, AC accepted the Patronage of the Children's Week Council of Australia.  The Queensland Association was also delighted that late last year that the Queensland  Governor Her Excellency Ms. Penelope Wensley AO accepted the Queensland patronage of the Association.

The Queensland Children's Week Association has enjoyed a successful year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members for their time, commitment and enthusiasm.   There will be activities for the whole family including picnics, morning teas, dance performances, games and so much more. Many thanks to all organisers for supporting Children's Week with your communities throughout Queensland.  Children need TIME, lots of LOVE, SUPPORT and CARE to assist them to grow into responsible adults.   Did you know that as parents/carers the most important valuing comment you can say each day to children is ....'I LOVE YOU'!    When children live with approval they learn to like themselves and when they live with acceptance and friendship they learn to find love in the world.

I encourage you to celebrate Children's Week and become involved in the many and exciting activities that will be held across Queensland this year.

ALWAYS   REMEMBER......A CARING WORLD SHARES   ...... ENJOY THE WEEK!

UNICEF Day for Change in 2010

UNICEF Day for Change is a day when public schools across Australia arrange an event that represents the theme ‘Change’, raising awareness and funds for a UNICEF education project overseas. Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, is the

leading, effective global organisation working to provide all children with access to a quality basic education.  Schools can participate in various activities on or around the day, such as playing games from around the world, learning about development issues or simulating how other children live and learn around the world. Every school is different and your school can get involved in many ways.

For more information, please visit www.unicefdayforchange.org.au

No donation is too small, so get involved and enrol your school today.

$1.42  – can provide two children with a pencil and exercise book

$14.36 – provides 10 children with a sketch pad and set of 8 colouring crayons

               each.

$57.44 – will provide a School-in-a-bag with individual school supplies for 40

students andone teacher. Each student receives a carry bag, ruler, two

pencils, exercise book, eraser, sharpener and box of colouring pencils- the

basic supplies for a good education.

$157  – provides double desks for classrooms

$280   – is the cost of a UNICEF School-in-a-Box kit – a ready-made educational

solution packed in a lockable metal box, containing equipment such as

pencils, erasers, exercise books, writing slates, scissors and carrier bags

sufficient for 80 pupils, and marker pens, posters, registers, and

blackboard equipment for a teacher. These kits are vital when school is

              disrupted due to emergency situations.

How to get involved:

1. Register by calling UNICEF Australia’s Education team on 02 9261 2811 or send the following details to education@unicef.org.au

School Name:                                                                                                                                    School Code:

2. Decide how your school will celebrate UNICEF Day for Change. You will receive a registration pack with ideas and activities from UNICEF Australia. You can also call UNICEF Australia’s education team on 02 9261 2811 or visit www.unicefdayforchange.org.au

3. Hold a UNICEF Day for Change at your school.

4. Send the raised funds to UNICEF Australia before 1 December 2010 and

help support children in Mozambique.

What kinds of things can schools do for UNICEF Day for Change?

UNICEF Day for Change can be celebrated in many ways. For example some schools may have a ‘non-uniform’ day with the theme of ‘Change’ referring to changing your clothes. Others may have special assemblies or classroom activities, focusing on how children and young people can help change the world. You can decide how your school takes part, but all activities will work in the same way; pupils make a donation to UNICEF in exchange for doing something different for the day.

Text Box: In 2009, Australian public schools raised almost $50,000 for children in Mozambique. On behalf of these children, thank you for your fantastic efforts.

Where do funds from UNICEF Day for Change 2010 go?

Funds raised for UNICEF Day for Change 2010 will go to UNICEF’s projects to improve education for children in Mozambique.

Since the end of years of conflict in 1992, children in Mozambique now have much better opportunities

to learn than before. However, education in Mozambique faces many challenges, such as lack of teaching materials,

trained teachers and basic infrastructure like classrooms and water points.

Over half of primary school aged students leave school before completing  grade five. Many of them are girls, orphans, or

otherwise particularly vulnerable children, such as those affected by HIV/AIDS. Without an education, the situation for

these children is unlikely to get better.

UNICEF education projects in Mozambique help establish Child Friendly Schools, which get children into school and keep them

there by providing an integrated school package, including essentials such as health and sanitation

facilities. The Child Friendly School initiative also engages community participation to support children enrolling in and staying in school.

Your participation in UNICEF Day for Change will provide much needed funds to provide quality education for more children in Mozambique.
